Top of the Town: Ravindra Bhadana, MLA Indian politician and a member of the 16th Legislative Assembly of Uttar Pradesh of India

Mr. Vikram Parakash Lamba, MD American Institute of English Language Pvt. Ltd. with 300+ Centers all across India

Who was your inspiration in Childhood ?

My mother and father were my source of inspiration. They had always encouraged me to do something in life.

Which great leaders from history or your contemporaries influenced your thought process?

I am very much influenced by our great leader Indira Gandhi.

Also Mahatama Gandhi made us understand that “Andolan” can have masses behind a mission which even guns cannot do.

I am also extremely influenced by our current Prime Minister Modi ji and also Kejriwal ji who are honest and dedicated towards country. There should be more people like them.

When did you start working on your ambition?

I actually wanted to join Army as my father was also in Army. But because of some reasons I was not able to join the Army. Then I along with few of my friends started a coaching institute by the name of Oxford. Oxford lasted for sometime but not for very long as my colleagues got jobs and they left.

During that time only I realized that the students are really knowledgeable and the only hindrance in their success is English. So after that, I thought of opening a speaking center for English.

At that time there were literally very few institutes teaching spoken English and they were also teaching like school studies, focusing only on grammar rules and not on spoken part which the child is already learning in school. So such classes were of no use to the students.

I realized this problem and starting researching on the ways to teach them English without telling them the rules by play way method and taking instances from the real life situation.

I really worked very hard and prepared a three months intensive course for English speaking which became a real hit and rest is history.

Franchisee development also happened on its own, when I realized that students are coming to attend the classes from far off places. To ease their learning and avoid wastage of timings, I opened another branch in Hapur and from there our growth story started.

My wife, also joined the company and came up with American Kids.

By Gods grace we are celebrating our 25th year this year.

Top of the Town: Mrs. Monika Kohli, 52 years young model and actor, into print ads, T.V. commercials and movies

Who was your inspiration in Childhood ?

I always believed that inspiration is from inside and not from outside. Only you can inspire yourself. Outward inspirations are momentary and do not stay for very long. My parents were always there for me. But coming in to this industry, I had been my own inspiration. I want to do it so I did it. Period.

I give this credit to God who gave me the opportunity. Also to my husband, my family and my hard work and positive thinking.  I always say, “Upar Wale ka haath, Ghar walon ka saath aur positive thinking.”

Which great leaders from history or your contemporaries influenced your thought process?

I do not think so. Everybody has preached something or other. Gandhiji has preached few good things, same with Nehru ji but you always learn from your life and your experiences. It is very difficult to learn from somebody’s else life as their circumstances were different and their thought process was different.

I personally, do not like to follow anybody because this is my life and I have to mould my life. I just cannot copy anybody and just do not want to be like somebody.

When did you start working on your ambition?

I have started at the age of 43. I always wanted to do modeling since my childhood. From the age of 19, I wanted to be a model but my parents did not allow me to join modeling and got me married.

After marriage my two sons were born and I was taking care of my family. When they grew up and settled down I thought of doing something. I was 43 at that time. I thought of joining business but my husband suggested me to do something that I enjoy doing; something that I wanted to do. He told me that not just that you wanted to do something so you would join business as business has its own set of stress. Then, I wanted to learn dancing so I joined Shiamak Davar’s classes in Delhi. Again my dream of modeling was always there at the back of my mind and the God was gracious enough to give me that opportunity. I used to buy my clothes from a plus size store in Delhi and they asked me to model for their clothes. And I heartily accepted because this was something that I always wanted to do. Then there is no looking back. I had been a part of print ads, TV commercials and serials and films. Currently, I am working on a serial “Zindagi ki Mahek” on Zee TV.

Most of my colleagues had shifted to international places like USA, Canada, and Australia etc. They asked me to shift there as well. But I wanted to be in India and do something for India only.

I was always inclined toward social service. So I decided to start Pahel ek Prayas and work toward the betterment of the sanitation conditions here.

How do you maintain work-life balance?

In the modern terms probably I am not a very fine professional. Even in workplace I would like to give them a kind of a family atmosphere. For me all my 140+ faculty members are like my kids and I address them mostly as Beta. I feel that if they are happy and they get that kind of atmosphere in school, they can contribute more. If they remain happy and at peace with themselves, naturally they will love the students better and they would teach them better. Say to have good teachers; I need to make them happy teachers first. And after bringing smiles to a few hundred kids whom I meet in the morning and whatever number of teachers I meet, when I reach home I feel satisfied, happy and contented. This helps me to maintain and create the right kind of balance between my personal and professional life.

Who is your best friend and his/her good qualities?

I have couple of friends. But one of my friends, Mr. Arvind Garg is really special. He is established in New York but we have been friends since 1965. He did his MA English with me and then did MA in American Literature from university of Leeds, England and started teaching. But later on he left teaching and pursued his hobby as a photographer and made it a profession. I love the way he looks at life. He has a knack of enjoying life. For him material possessions do not mean anything and believed in living life the way one wants.

What one thing makes you very angry?

Normally I am not very angry but sometimes when you watch some students and come across somebody who is really disrespectful and not bothered about his parents who are supporting him with a great difficulty. Some parents are working as a driver or laborer and still paying the fees for the studies of their children and their kids do not behave properly with them. This really bugs me.

Similarly if a child is really disrespectful to a lady teacher, it irritates me a lot. Though I do not show anger but I still try to make them understand politely for their ill deeds.

What one thing makes you very happy?

Smile on the face of somebody make me very happy. I am happy with small things in life, may be just a casual compliment, and may be somebody has written a few words on a simple piece of paper. Small things can make your day. Big things are normally not in our hands so why wait for them to happen to be happy.

I was born in an economically weak family, had a very tough childhood and studied with great difficulty but these things never bothered me much. Now I have all the luxuries that are required to live life comfortably. Suppose I have a car but I would not mind to travel in a rickshaw if I need to even today.

What accomplishments of your life you are proud of?

I feel that I have received lot of love from lot of people. That probably is the greatest accomplishment of my life. And the day that I consider the best day of my life was when I retired from DAV public school. That day I received so much love from all the students and teachers. The whole day was devoted to my farewell. Every child had something for me whether a card or a flower and all those 2500+ students and 100+ had given me the most memorable send off in an open jeep and loads of flowers is unforgettable. The idea that so many people are loving you and shedding tears when you are leaving is the biggest accomplishments.

I have got many awards but I do not consider them a big accomplishment but being loved by so many students is definitely the biggest accomplishment of my life.

What are your contributions to your city Meerut?

I have been here since 1995, almost 22 years.  Whatever number of students I have met, if I was able to change the thoughts or life of even one percent of my students in a positive way, I consider that as a contribution to the city of Meerut.

What are your future goals?

I think whatever life is there, I want to spend it in peace and wanted to contribute for the welfare of the society. I wish to die in harness, i.e. die working.
