The International Olympic Committee is to step-up its “scenario planning” for the Tokyo 2020 Games — including their postponement — it said after an emergency meeting on Sunday. The IOC will hold detailed discussions which will include possibly changing the July 24 start date due to the global coronavirus pandemic, but emphasised that a cancellation of the Games would not solve any of the problems.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Sunday that his government would ask parliament to extend for another 15 days until April 11 the state of emergency which it has imposed this month to try to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. The nationwide state of emergency was first announced on March 14 and it bars people in the nation from leaving home except for essential outings.
